J. Fred Schmidt opened a meat packing house in German Village in 1886. His grandson George F. Schmidt opened Schmidt's Sausage Haus around the corner in 1967. The fourth and fifth generations of the family run it today, along with catering, sausage trucks and a State Fair food stand that dates to 1914.
